What If It Starts With Us?

There are songs that encourage us. There are songs that comfort us. And then there are songs that make it a little harder to look away. “Start Right Here” by Casting Crowns is one of those songs.

It begins with a picture of a church that is strangely familiar: comfortable, entertained, busy, passionate about change—but sometimes far removed from the people who are hurting just outside its doors.

The questions are uncomfortable because they are not really about someone else’s church. They are about us. We can talk about revival, healing, justice, freedom and transformation. We can pray for our cities, our nations and the world. We can long to see people encounter Jesus.

But what happens when the change we are asking God to bring requires something from us first?

That is where the song becomes more than a critique of Christian culture. It becomes an invitation to examine our own hearts. The reference to the older brother in the story of the prodigal son makes this especially powerful. The older brother never left home. He stayed. He worked. He did what was expected of him. And yet, when his brother returned, something inside him revealed that

Being close to the Father’s house is not necessarily the same as having the Father’s heart.

That is a sobering thought. It is possible to be in church every Sunday and still need God to transform something in us on Monday.

It is possible to sing about grace while struggling to extend it. To pray for the lost while remaining safely distant from them. To ask God to heal our land while avoiding the people whose pain makes us uncomfortable. And perhaps that is why the most important words in the song are not the ones describing what the Church should do.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF PRAYER
START
with me.
“Lord, I’m starting right here.”

They are the simplest ones:

“Lord, I’m starting right here.”

There is humility in that sentence.
It doesn’t say, Start with them.
It doesn’t say, Fix the Church.
It doesn’t say, Change the world.
It says, start with me.

That doesn’t mean ignoring injustice, suffering or the brokenness around us. Quite the opposite. It means recognizing that genuine transformation cannot remain an idea we admire from a distance. At some point, the Gospel has to reach our attitudes, our relationships, our priorities, our streets and the way we treat the person standing in front of us.

The song asks what would happen if the church on Sunday were still the church on Monday. That question is worth sitting with. Because perhaps the world does not only need Christians who know what they believe. It needs Christians whose lives make those beliefs visible.

Not perfectly. Not loudly. But genuinely. Maybe revival begins closer than we think. Maybe before asking God to change the world out there, we have to become willing to let Him search the world within us.

It’s got to start right here. And perhaps the most honest prayer we can make is the one the song leaves us with: Lord, I’m starting right here.
